Until Mickey Mouse, the Kewpie was the most famous cartoon character. Created by Rosie O'Neill in 1908 and debuted in a comic strip in 1909. by 1912, JD Kestner began producing these little cherubic dolls under the watchful eye of O'Neill. At the height of popularity of these cute little figures, O'Neill was the highest paid female illustrators in the world. Two of these three cuties are Kestner. Each retain their original Kewpie Germany heart label on front and the round "Design Patented" label on the back. Tall doll stands approx 6 7/8" tall and has writing on the back 85 kk. The short one stands approx 4 3/8" with 25 hand written under left arm. The middle Kewpie is unknown mfg, but it is all bisque with subtle color changes, less of a pink hue and they eyes are painted slightly different without the white dot. Stands approx 5 7/8".
