Description
A Pair of Fine and Rare Maori Kauri Gum Busts, New Zealand, Late 19th/20th century. Finely modeled fossilized Kauri tree resin busts, with articulated facial tattoos. Possibly depicting a royal couple. Size: 1) 14'' x 8'' x 10'' (36 x 20 x 25 cm); 2) 15'' x 7.5'' x 10'' (38 x 19 x 25 cm). The database for Pitt-Rivers's "Second Collection," created by Cambridge University, illustrated a similar pair of busts, p.1789. After donating an initial 'founding collection' to the University of Oxford, which formed the basis of the Pitt Rivers Museum, his second collection was dispersed by the family in stages at auction and is mostly in private hands.
