Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
Eastern Europe, Russia, imported to Alaska, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A fine forged-iron axe head ("topor" in Russian) of a surprisingly lightweight composition meant for splitting and shaping wood. The axe head presents with a slender body, a triangular hafting hole with a lower lip meant for gripping and stabilizing the pole, a tall neck with a curved lower hook, and a crescent-shaped blade head with pointed tips and a sharpened edge. Transporting hundreds of iron tools like this example across land was impractical for Russian traders, so they moved them from eastern Russia to western Alaska via well-traveled waterways. Size: 5.25" W x 4.8" H (13.3 cm x 12.2 cm).
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection; ex-private MacLeod collection, Alaska
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
