Item Details
Description
SANTA CLARA STYLE BLACK ON BLACK, "BASKET" POT, possibly by EMMALITA C. CHINO, ca. 1951 Condition: Excellent Mark: On the bottom, in pencil, there are two lines of writing, plus a date. The top line appears to be the name "---------ta": but only the "ta" is strong. The second line appears to start with a "C". The date appears to be '51. Description: The top half of the pot consists of two, roughly entwined loop handles. A burnished line extends down from each handle. The four spaces between the lines are filled with burnished shapes, defined by two, stacked, unburnished triangles, pointed down, centered on each vertical burnished line. The base of the pot is flat. Hand-shaped red clay body, coil-formed with thick walls, fired in an open-air, (dung) reduction fired. Note: (1) The Andrea Fisher Fine Pottery Gallery, Santa Fe, had about 8 of these pots, which the salesperson called "Friendship Pots". Half were black-on-black, and half were deeply carved in the later Santa Clara tradition. The salesperson called the style “Engagement Pot”. (2) 2,000 Artists lists a Juanita Coriz and a Juanita Chino, but neither is likely. The neighbors of the seller bought this in the Santa Clara Pueblo in 1951. 5.5"h x 4"d.
