Description
Near-pair of hand painted Indian palimplores in linen. 68" x 84"; and 66" x 80". Good condition, with a couple of minor seam separations. c. 1900. Palimplores were first imported into Europe in the 1600's. These Indian hand-painted textiles were both fashionable and expensive. Because of their popularity, they threatened the domestic silk and wool industries, and were banned in Britain from 1701 to 1774. The East India Company was only allowed to import them into London for re-export to Europe and the colonies. After the Revolution, American mechants traded directly with India, and a few rare examples survive.
