Pair large Sevres style jars, ex Duke of Newcastle, 18th/19th c., parcel gilt and polychrome painted porcelain, consisting of two cylindrical lidded containers on triangular stands, each decorated with figural and game bird reserves on a puce fish scale scale ground, one jar marked with underglaze model number "284/9", both stands with affixed paper labels reading "Midland Counties Art Museum / Nottingham Castle / lent by The Duke of Newcastle / date 1879", each 16"h x 8.5"dia (total)
Provenance: Property of a New York City Collector; Ex-collection The Duke of Newcastle, England; exhibited at Midland Counties Art Museum, Nottingham Castle, 1879
Notes/Literature: The VI Duke of Newcastle rented his property, Nottingham Castle, to create a permanent home for The Midland Counties Art Museum. The museum was inaugurated in the new building in 1878, with much of the collection loaned from the significant holdings of Lord Newcastle. The family was particularly known to have one of the finest collections of 18th Sevres porcelain, assembled by the Second Duke of Newcastle, as well as fine examples of Derby and Dresden porcelain. The pair of jars in this lot was likely loaned for a special exhibition coinciding with the 1st anniversary of the museum's founding.
