Luis Martinez Pedro (1910 - 1990) Cuban. Measure 10 1/2"in H x 7"in W. No frame. Of Cuban origin, Luis Martínez Pedro was born in 1910. He followed architecture classes at the University of Havana, and from 1929 he studied at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts. The repression caused by the Machado dictatorship forced him to leave his country to travel to the US In 1932, he settled in New Orleans where he followed painting and drawing classes at the School of "Art and Craft". In 1933, he returned to Cuba and worked with advertising companies. It was in 1943 that he held his first personal exhibition where he presented the series entitled "Love" and "Animals". Between 1944 and 1956, he participated in the illustration for the magazine “Origen”, and from 1950, he made ceramic decorations in the Santiago de Las Vegas workshop. In 1953 he won two awards: one for "Imaginary Garden" presented during the Second Biennial of Sao Paulo, and another for "Blue Space" awarded by UNESCO. Then he devoted himself to Argentine concrete painting. After the victory of the Cuban revolution in 1959, he became a professor at the National School of Art of Cuba. Four years later, in 1963, he presented the exhibition "Territorial Waters" made up of abstract works, a theme that captivated until 1973. From that date on, he changed his style again and later made a series dedicated to Cuban flora. Luis Martínez Pedro passed away in 1989 at the age of 79. A theme that captivated until 1973.
