Description
A carved wooden mask divided into two planes with black and white mineral pigment and embellished with numerous small holes. Pende Mbuya mask were at one time used during mukanda initiation ceremonies to mark the end of male circumcision rituals, mbuya masquerades are now used to highlight a number of characters and roles in Pende society. Pende peoples, Congo, central Africa. Provenance - Ex. Robert Reinhold Collection, NY; Purchased from Bernheimer’s Antiques, NYC. in 1975
