Hendrick Goltzius (German Dutch 1558-1617). Original 16th Century antique engraving, The Adoration of the Shepherds, in the style of Jacopo Bassano with strong influences from Albrecht Durer. Produced 1594 as part of a Life of the Virgin series by Goltzius, the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque, or Northern Mannerism, period, who was lauded for his technique, technical mastery, and the exuberance of his compositions. His engravings are held in the collections of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), and the Blanton Museum of Art (Austin). Depicts a host of spectral angels to the top with central images of Mary, Joseph, infant Jesus and shepherds, with cows, lamb, and other forms. Four lines in Latin verse by 16th-century Dutch poet Franco Estius (Franco van Est) form a caption at the bottom of the engraving: Caeli opifex, rerum dominus, Divum atque hominum Rex / Nascitur en vilis tuguri sub paupere tecto, / Et praesepe tenet, quem non capit arduus aether, / Non mare, non tellus, non vasti machina mundi. / F.
