Description
Georg Pencz (German, ca. 1500-1550). Original 16th Century antique engraving, VIRGILE SUSPENDU (Virgil Suspended In A Basket). The engraving depicts the power of women to use their beauty, charm, and cunning to thwart even the cleverest men, a popular early 16th Century theme. According to legend, the ancient Roman poet Virgil fell in love with the Emperor's daughter, but she punished him for his impudence: After promising to raise Virgil to her bedroom window in a basket, she left him hanging halfway. Produced circa 1542 by Pencz, a member of the art studio of Albrecht Durer and, as an engraver, ranked among the best of the German “Little Masters.” Presented in a protective cardboard matte. Original Kennedy Galleries, New York, title sticker inside. Good overall condition. Measures 2 3/4 in. x 3 1/2 in. (sight), 19 1/4 in. x 14 1/4 in. (matte). Sold unframed.
