Description
A West African Dan Mande dean gle or ge spirit mask, hand carved by Liberian tribal artists. The Dan people refer to the masks as gle or ge, which refers both to the physical mask and the individual spirits the mask is believed to embody during masquerade performances, through which the spirits of the forest may enter the civilized world. It is believed that each gle has its own personality, dance and speech patterns and is given a personal name. A dean gle, the apprent motif of this mask, is a gentle, peaceful spirit. By tradition, the wearer of the mask takes on the spirit's qualities during the masquerade. The mask is modeled in a hyper realistic form with protruding pursed lips, stylized eyes, a curved, high domed forehead, and a rigid high coiffure. Includes carved holes to sides for fastening ties, not included. Good to fair condition with rich patina and aging throughout. Measures 12 in. x 6 1/2 in. x 3 1/4 in.
