Oil on canvas 24 x 30 in., 29 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. (framed).She was born in Adair County, Kentucky February 25, 1921. She displayed an artistic inclination from early childhood and longed to attend art school. The harsh realities of the Great Depression and World War II prevented those aspirations from materializing; therefore Mrs. Colvin was primarily self-taught.In 1959 she began to pursue artistic expression more seriously. She joined the Greensburg(Kentucky) Art Club and studied diligently. Mrs. Colvin and her husband George opened an art gallery and frame shop in Greensburg in 1965. With a full-time studio now at her disposal, her painting became even more prolific. Over the course of the next 35 years she exhibited in shows around the Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and the Tennessee region.Mrs. Colvin was a charter and signature member of The Kentucky Watercolor Society and exhibited with The American Watercolor Society on two occasions. Most of her work was done in oils and watercolors with some being done in pastel, acrylic and pen & ink. Her impressionist style was applied most often to scenes of rural Kentucky - landscapes, farm scenes, old buildings. She also painted many works of still life and character study. In conversations about her art she most often spoke of conveying a "feeling" through the use of light and composition. Her best works bring to canvas and paper an emotional, impressionist realism that captures the imagination of viewers.Mrs. Colvin passed away October 17, 2005 in her hometown of Greensburg, Kentucky.
