Description
Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990). Original oil painting on canvas. Florida wetlands landscape with cypress and palm trees and other flora, surrounding a central inlet reflecting the scene on its surface. Signed lower right A.E. BACKUS. The artist founded the Indian River School, the Florida Highwaymen movement, and was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters. Presented in a decorative wooden frame with linen border. "1960" handwritten in pen to verso on framework. Good overall condition, craquelure in areas, loss to lower left quadrant in water; normal wear to frame. Measures 25 in. x 30 1/4 in. (canvas), 31 1/4 in. x 36 1/4 in. (framed). Hill Auction Gallery will not ship. Gallery will refer a local shipper for international buyers.
