Newton is a second generation painter, the son of Sam Newton, founding member of The Florida Highwayman group, young 1950s and1960s era African American landscape artists mentored by Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), who was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters.
