Description
Unusual English Carved Mahogany Manor House Chest, c. 1870, the shaped concave top over a concave frieze drawer, above a center fall front secretary with a leather lined writing surface, fitted with two drawers, open storage, and a cupboard, flanked by two short deep drawers, over three setback deep drawers flanked by turned tapered columns, to a block plinth base, H.- 49 1/2 in., W.- 50 3/8 in., D.- 24 7/8 in.
Condition
Condition is consistent with age and use. Dovetail intact, but there is a minor crack in veneer in top drawer on left side. Also, possible wood fill repairs, but they are very subtle to left of first full width drawer. There are visible scratches and scuffmarks throughout, which are consistent with age and use of furniture. There is some active chipping of wood veneer on bottom front right, bottom right side and bottom left side. Fleabite chips on front of veneer in upper right. Drawers move easily. Keyhole in secretary shows some scraping of veneer. The large drawer hardware is not original and the original hole for handle is visible inside the drawer. There is no key present. A handsome example.
