Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a ceramic sculpture, done in the contemporary art style of Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, 1929 - ). This piece is a small orange pumpkin figurine dotted with intricate strings of black dots. Full of the offbeat splendor for which Kusama is so well beloved. Comes with an accompanying cushioned box that reads, "Pumpkin. Yayoi Kusama." A fine addition to any collection. The figurine measures approximately 4" x 3.25". The accompanying box measures 5" x 5".

Reverse side of piece features a number of handwritten inscriptions, which appear to be in Italian. One inscription reads: "Ferrante. Tels felpate chiara. Alipozo." [sp?] A paper label affixed to the reverse side of the canvas reads, "Yayoi Kusama".

Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, 1929 - ) emerged in the New York art scene during the 1960s. She received her formal art training at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, then emigrated to the United States in 1957. Kusama's first one-woman show occurred just two years later. Her paintings are a direct reflection of childhood hallucinations, and, through her work, we see a woman hard at work unraveling the intricate patterns of her own mind. Kusama's early experiments with repetitive images, mirrors, and soft sculpture preceded similar work by Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) and Claes Oldenburg (American, 1929 - ). Despite familial and societal resistance, Yayoi Kusama has become one of the preeminent figures in the art world today. Yayoi Kusama is a household name all over the globe, and devotees have affectionately titled her the "Polka Dot Queen". Kusama opened her personal museum in Tokyo in 2017 and her 'Infinity Mirror Rooms' have been installed in major art galleries the world over. This year, Yayoi Kusama celebrated her 90th birthday.
