Description
John Ward (Born 1938, England)
Black and White Vase
ca 1983
Stoneware; ht. 10, wd, 8.5 in.
One of Britain's best known and most widely respected living potters, John Ward has produced a body of work comprised of mainly coil built stoneware vessel forms, generally favoring matte glazes and hand applied oxides. Each piece is hand built of flattened coils; some are then cut and rejoined, incised with a pattern or burnished with pebbles. They are then twice fired in an electric kiln. Ward trained at East Ham Technical College and Camberwell School of Art during the 1960s. He started his first workshop in London in 1971, and and is currently working at his own studio near Newport in Wales.
Provenance: From the Dorothy Miner Collection. Acquired from Graham Gallery, New York.
