Description
AN ANTIQUE WILLIAM III (1689-1702) MAP, "Comitatus Burgundiæ..." AMSTERDAM, 17TH/18TH CENTURY, "...tam in Præcipuas ejus Praefecturas quam in minores earundem Balliviatus aliasque Ditiones subjacentes et insertas distincte divisas," a hand colored engraving on paper, publishing attributed to Nicholæs Visscher II (1649-1702), plate prepared by Gilliam Van der Gouwen (1640-1720) and illustrations designed by Philip Tideman (1657-1705), in the upper left William III (1650-1702) of England's coat of arms, the lower right has a vignette of Ceres, the Roman goddess of a plentiful earth; she is guarded by Mars, the god of war, a compass rose near center, a key in the lower center right foreground indicates crowded cities, towns, villages, abbeys, priories, mountain seated structures, and official areas under the protection of the king, hand numbered 22 in ink. 22 1/2" x 18 1/2" Note: A cartouche with English coat of arms: "William III D.G., Angliæ, Scotiæ, Franciæ and Hiberniæ Regi. Religionis et Libertatis Oppressæ Liberatori æ defensori." William III of England is acknowledged here in the upper left cartouche as the protector and collector of funds for the protection from religious persecution in these areas.  Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
