Description
A mid-19th century Ottoman Turkish 900 standard silver incense burner, tughra of Sultan Abdulmejid I (1839-1861) Composed of six sections, the circular base with pierced guilloche edge with stars, a square base leading to a waisted circular column with a central inverted conical body, with cast and applied twin handles formed as acanthus capped foliate scrolls, the hinged waisted conical lid surmounted by a detachable finial formed as a cluster of spheres upon stalks. The base section is flat chased decoration of foliate scrolls and rosettes, the body with flat chased decoration in the mamluk revival style of figures and animals below arabesques and stylised calligraphy. All below a die-rolled border of anthemion. The cover with pierced decoration of leaves upon an engraved vine, surmounted by flat chased panel work. Marked with tughra and sahh marks to main section and lid front, base plate sections and column, assay scrape to front of body and lid, inside of base section and underneath base plate. The finial seemingly unmarked. Height – 18.5 cm / 7.25 inches Weight – 373 grams / 11.99 ozt
