Description
A Victorian sterling silver gilt figural candlestick, London 1878 by George Fox Tri-form base with cast and chased pierced foliate edge, centred with a detachable cast figure of genuflecting blackamoor in a tunic chased with foliate scrolls, arms raised to a cast and chased pierced foliate drop pan, with a central fluted capital. Fully marked underneath, part-marked to underside of drip pan. Height – 14.7 cm / 6 inches Weight – 340 grams / 10.93 ozt Though blackamoor candelabra appear to have originated in the late seventeenth century with Anthony Nelme, the form remains quite rare, and only a handful of eighteenth century examples exist.
