Description

The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote, Translated from the Spanish of Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra. To Which is Prefixed, Some Account of the Author's Life by T. Smollet. Tobias Smollett's translation of Don Quixote first appeared in London in 1755. It is historically important because it is one of the principal versions in which Cervantes's novel was known to several generations of English and American readers. A rare and important early American edition of Cervantes classic Don Quixote. Published 1803 by John Conrad & Co. et al. Full leather. Missing volume 1 of the 4-volume set. Hinges sound on all volumes. Vol. 2 – Two inch crack at front lower joint and ½” crack at rear lower joint. Small crack at lower spine. Small bit of chipping at foot of spine. Rubbing at extremities with a small scuff on front cover and a couple of small scruffs on rear. First signature loose but holding with top stitch. Vol. 3 – Rubbing at extremities, two scuffs on front cover, one on rear. No major faults. Vol. 4 – Lower right corner of front cover appears to have been repaired at some time in the past. Small area of disturbed surface on front cover. Two very small gouges on rear cover. Leather binding looks like it could benefit from an application of conditioner, but it is not dry. Small chip at each end of spine. 4 x 6.25. 340, 399 and 385 pp.
