Napoleonic Era Watermarked Stationery, 2 Blank & Unused Pieces, Ex-Nicholson Napoleon Collection
Two pieces of blank and unused stationery bearing watermarks associated with the reign of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). From the Nicholson Napoleon Collection.
The lot is comprised of:
1. A whole leaf of cream laid paper with an encircled "B" for "Bonaparte" watermark located at center. Expected folds and minor closed tears corresponding to these folds. Overall light toning and scattered foxing. Else very good. 8" x 9.625."
2. Portions of one cream laid paper leaf, the two detached but present halves bearing a large circular watermark measuring approximately 3.75" in diameter. The watermark depicts a crowned eagle in profile facing left, encircled by "Dieu Protège la France / 1811" [trans: "God Protect France / 1811." Minor edge darkening, light toning, and isolated foxing, else very good. The assembled pieces measure 8.5" x 6.125."
