Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed During the Civil War

Rare Civil War-dated autograph letter signed by Ulysses S. Grant as Commanding General of the U.S. Army, dated November 10, 1864. Writing from his headquarters at City Point, Virginia during the Siege of Petersburg, Grant instructs General Alfred Terry regarding the movement of his troops. Three weeks prior, Terry was appointed commander of the X Corps upon the death of General David Birney.  Document measures 7.75'' x 10''. A few small tears, block of toning, folds, and some foxing and soiling, mostly to verso. Hinged at top of document by two pieces of tape to mat board. Overall in very good condition.

Composed upon letterhead printed ''Head Quarters Armies of the United States'', letter reads in full, ''City Point Va. Nov. 10th 1864 / Maj. Gen. Terry: It will now be better to keep your Cavalry to watch the movements of the enemy. They had better push out in the morning to discover if any movement is on foot but not to go on the expedition ordered to-day. / U.S. Grant / Lt. Gen.''
