Japanese Samurai warrior Menpo or Mempo half mask. Designed to protect the face in battle, from the nose to the chin, and to hold the cords of the kabuto (helmet) to the warrior’s head. Lacquered composite material, brown to exterior, red orange to interior. Features horse hair kuchi hige (mustache), shiwa (facial wrinkles), odayori ore kugi (posts), hana (detachable nose guard) and tare (throat guard). Tare is constructed of three plates secured by knotted silk. Presented on a Lucite stand mounted to a custom wooden base. Good overall condition, normal wear.
