Norman, Royal Navy, The Most Distinguished Order of the St. Michael and St George (CMG) Companion's neck badge, silver-gilt and enamels, China 1900, no clasp (Midsn A.H. Norman, R.N., H.M.S. Dido.), 1914-15 Star (Commr. A.H. Norman, R.N.), British War and Victory Medals (Commr. A.H. Norman. R.N.) with MID oakleaves, plus a white metal Battle of Jutland tribute medal and related dress miniature awards, with C.M.G. box of issue, plus various original ephemera relating to Norman including Christmas cards from H.M.S. Roxburgh, Group photograph of crew on H.M.S. 'For valuable services as Commander (N.) in the Flagship of the Admiral, Second in Command, Grand Fleet Vice Admiral A.H. Norman (1881-1973, joined the Royal Navy in 1896 as a cadet, became a midshipman the following year, advanced to Lieutenant (Navigating) 1903, Lieutenant Commander 1911, Commander 1914, Captain 1919, retiring from service 1931 and Rear Admiral in 1936, served in various ships including HMS Britannia, Dido, Undaunted, Neptune, Marlborough, Revenge and Commander, according to his obituary, he was an exceptionally skillful Navigating officer, he was commander in HMS Marlborough an 'Iron Duke' class of battleship at Jutland and was hit by a torpedo which killed two of the crew. Following the Battle of Jutland Norman received a commendation for bravery followed by his CMG Captain Edward Dudley Norman DSO, DSC, Royal Navy (1910-1998), was commission Lieutenant in 1934, advanced to Lieutenant Commander 1942, retired Captain 1960. Norman commanded six submarines during WWII, his first being HMS H 44 from 12 March 1940, H44 carried out several patrols in the North Sea and sank enemy shipping off the Norwegian coast for which Norman was awarded the DSC. Norman went out to the Mediterranean to take command of Upright in the Malta-based submarine flotilla, later dubbed "The Fighting Tenth". ON 5 February 1941 HMS Upright made a torpedo attack on an Italian convoy off Kerkenah, Tunisia. Four Torpedoes were fires at a 4000 tons merchant vessel but all missed the target. On 23 February Upright torpedoed and sank the merchant ship Silvia Tripcovich near Kerkenah Bank, there were no survivors. 25 February Upright torpedoed and sank the Italian cruiser Armando Diaz near the Kerkenah Bank and misses an Italian destroyer in the same attack, Norman was awarded the DSO for the sinking of Armando Diaz. Invalided home from Malta with dysentery in July 1941, he took command in October of the German U-boat, U.570, which had surrendered to an RAF Hudson aircraft south of Iceland in August, and was renamed HMS Graph. In a year's trials under Norman Graph gave the Allies priceless information about the construction, performance and weaponry of the standard of the standard Type VII-boat. After Graph Norman commanded Tuna and Alcide, one of the first of the long range A Class patrol submarines intended for the Pacific. Norman left the Submarine service in 1947 and had appointments in the Admiralty, with Nato, as Executive Officer of HMS Heron, the naval air station at Yeovilton, where he learned to fly, and in command of the sloop Nereide on the South African Station. The Royal Malaysian Navy, which formed independence in 1957, began to purchase a ex-Royal Navy minesweepers. But as its first Commodore, Norman laid the foundations of a small but efficient force which played a full part in the confrontation with Indonesia in the 1960s, he was awarded the Malaysian decoration, the Pingat Khidmat Berbakti. In retirement Norman became the secretary of the Royal Malta Yacht Club and played an influential role in establishing the first Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race
