[New Jersey]Manuscript Book(New Jersey), 1760s-70s. 12mo. Consists of 24 leaves: first two, and last three, sewn together; one excised; seven pages completely blank. Text consists of records of births and deaths; poems; one full-page illustration, one smaller one; diary-like entries of sermons heard, by whom, and where; copy book-like exercises, etc. Signatures or names of Mary Loyd, 1763; James Loyd, 1771; John Loyd; Sarah Loyd; Malenda Lloyd, etc. The New Jersey towns of Cheesquake (Cheesequake, Middlesex County), Crossweeks (Crosswicks, Burlington County), and Elizabeth Town (Elizabethtown, Union County) are mentioned. Jonathan Dickinson, co-founder of the College of New Jersey, later Princeton University, is quoted. A Mr. Morgan, a Mr. Jones, and a Mr. Still are all mentioned as having preached at the various locales above. A Huldah Holmes (1709-1784) and the Reverend John Tennent (1707-1732), both of Monmouth County are also mentioned. Contemporary simple rustic leather binding with paste-downs covered in MS. in ink. Text block now separated but intact.
