Civil War Era Pocket Color Portrait/Photo in original glass covered gold frame inside a leather fold out case by Thomas Faris, photographer, 751 Broadway, New York, NY. circa 1864. The first colour photo was 1861 in Japan. The Portrait of "Penny" is one of the earliest color photo's given the location of the photographer at the time the picture was taken. circa 1864. The work is so well done its difficult to distiguish if its a photo or a painting. It is likely a photograph that was hand painted in extreme detail which is how the earliest color photos were done. Thomas Faris was a very well renowned photographer. He introduced daguerreotype to Ohio and later became a favorite photographer for Walt Whitman. You can find another Portrait done by Thomas Faris of Walt Whitman on the web but it is not in color. 3 5/8" by 3 1/8"
