The work is so well done its difficult to distiguish if its a photo or a painting. It is likely a photograph that was hand painted in extreme detail which is how the earliest color photos were done. Thomas Faris was a very well renowned photographer. He introduced daguerreotype to Ohio and later became a favorite photographer for Walt Whitman.
