Portrait of Charles Sumner Woolworth (1856-1947), signed and dated lr oil on canvas, 1940
Chairman and C.E.O. of the giant F.W. Woolworth Co. for twenty-five years, after taking on the mantle left by his brother Frank W. Woolworth in 1919. Long before that, he managed the second Woolworth 'Great Five Cent Store' in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania before ten cent lines existed. He would build his own successful retail company, which merged with others in 1912 to form the world's largest chain at the time. Most famously, the Woolworth Building was created under his tenure as Chairman of the company.
Sidney Dickinson spent a sojourn in the southern US which greatly shaped the direction of his career. Dickinson was an instructor in New York for many years, teaching at the Art Students League in 1919–1920 and heading a life class at the National Academy from 1928 to 1931 and again from 1939 to 1943. He became extremely well known from his portraits of prominent, successful personages, all while teaching at the Art Students League in New York from 1949 to 1973. Dickinson kept a studio in Carnegie Hall until retiring.br>
