Woodstock Festival Master Tapes From Producer Eric Blackstead W/Record Studio Correspondence, Appraisal, Original Shipping Boxes & More - This lot represents a true, once-in-a-lifetime piece of music history, as these are the Woodstock master tapes from the estate of music industry figure Eric Blackstead. These audiotapes reflect the performances of the most famous concert ever held on American soil, and include performances by fourteen artists and also songs which were never released to the public. These tapes are the only master tapes from this concert in the private sector of the world, and are the working Masters used by Eric Blackstead for the production of the Woodstock I (1970) and Woodstock II (1971) albums. The album compilation began in Los Angeles in January 1970 before later shifting to a studio in New York, and Blackstead and a team of assistants painstakingly piece together the album, overcoming many hurdles throughout the process. Blackstead did not simply want a collection of live tracks, but a cohesive album that would replicate the festival experience for the listener. He worked so intensely on the project that his health severely deteriorated, eventually suffering from a collapsed lung which he endured for the rest of his life. These tapes include performances from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater, The Band, Johnny Winter, The Who, Arlo Guthrie, Joe Cocker, Crosby Stills and Nash, and others. The tapes contain over 770 minutes on various formats including 1/4", 1" and 2" magnetic tape recordings, cassette tapes and digital DATs. Included with the Woodstock tapes from Blackstead's collection are (3) original shipping boxes, a Spanish Woodstock poster, "Woodstock Festival Remembered" book, correspondence from Capitol Records and others, and a highly detailed appraisal by Dr. Steve Johnson (ASA, ISA, AAA) from 2000 which estimated a value of $1.6 million to $2.43 million, which makes a comparison between the importance of these audio recordings to the John F. Kennedy assassination video. These recordings are the closest you can find to the true Woodstock festival experience, and a once in a generation opportunity to own an object of monumental cultural importance.
