Description
1856 Utah POLYGAMY Marriage and Morals in Mormonism LDS Parley Pratt Sexuality
“Let the monogamic law, restricting a man to one wife…rise no more!”
– Marriage and morals in Utah
Parley Pratt was one of the early leaders of the Mormon church and the Latter-Day Saints. Numerous liturgical texts were published in the 19th-century on Mormonism including lesser-known tracts and pamphlets such as this one from Pratt. ‘Marriage and Morals in Utah’ was written to educate young Mormons on the horrors of adultery, pre-marital fornication, and illegitimate relationships. Though, this work takes a firm stance on the necessity of polygamy. Note this passage from the final page of this work:
“Let the monogamic law, restricting a man to one wife, with all its attendant train of whoredoms, intrigues, seductions, wretched and lonely single life, hatred, envy, jealousy, infanticide, illegitimacy, disease and death, like the millstone cast into the depths of the sea — sink with Great Babylon to rise no more.”
