Description
1887 CAXTON Golden Legend of the CROSS Medieval Woodcut Illustrations Veldener
A beautiful, 1887 facsimile edition of Veldener’s printing of ‘Golden Legend on the Finding of the Holy Cross’. This work includes William Caxton’s English translation as well as 64 impressive illustrations from Fisher fresco paintings from the Chapel of Trinity Church in Stratford England. The original 15th-century work was written by an unknown author; though, the decorative Veldener printing was much desired. The illustrations are known to be reproduced from the 1483 original edition of the ‘Golden Legend’.
Notes and prefatory material of John Ashton and Baring Gould. Ashton covers the legend itself, depicting types of miracles, raising people from the dead, healing the sick, and oddly making ‘black people become white’!
This 1887 edition was published by Unwin and bound in a decorative binding, in the style of 15th-century masters.
