Description
1910 1st ed Richard Wagner Rhinegold Valkyrie Ring of Nibelung Rackham ART
“Joy is not in things; it is in us”
― Richard Wagner
Richard Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” (or “The Ring of the Nibelung”, WWV 86) was a landmark work in the history of music. It was a collection of four large-scale operas that created a ‘cycle’ of works which would in-turn be called the “Ring Cycle”. The story loosely follows characters of Norse mythology and was a major influence in J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
This fine, first-issue 1910 printing was illustrated by the famous Arthur Rackham. This book contains two movements of the work – “The Rhinegold”, and “The Valkyrie” (The others being “Siegfried” and “The Twilight of the Gods”). The color illustrations are classic Rackham style and feature trolls, beasts, magic spells, and more in a very dark, and sinister fantasy style. In fact, these illustrations are often collected, printed, and sold as a collection of prints without the text!
