English botanist Philip Miller F.R.S. (1691-1771) was the son of a Deptford nurseryman of Scottish descent. Well-educated, Philip travelled extensively through England, Flanders and Holland, studying horticulture, gardening and agriculture. Philip succeeded his father as ‘gardener to the company of apothecaries of Chelsea’ and established his own nursery at Southwark. From 1722 to 1770 Philip Miller was foreman of Chelsea Physic Garden, a botanic garden which had been set up in 1673 and belonged to the Society of Apothecaries of London. Forced to retire from management of the Garden at the age of 80, Philip Miller died the following year.

Greatly skilled in the cultivation of plants, during his time at Chelsea, Philip transformed this private garden of medicinal plants into the greatest botanical garden in Europe. With unequaled knowledge of living plants, even foreign botanists referred to Miller as Hortulanorum princeps (Chief of Gardeners). Philip Miller was elected Fellow of the Royal Society and wrote copiously on botany, publishing excellently illustrated works.
