Description
Asian Meiji Japanese kutani satsuma signed oversized exhibition ceramic vase approx 25"H x 10"D The red calligraphy on the base reads "Kutani Kinuta sei, kin Takada rei, yama zakura" (Kutani ware humbly made by the artist Kinuta, depicting mountain cherry blossoms in the valley of Takada). The writing on the roof of the structure reads "Jyu Zan, Kan Hi Asa" (freedom, Sunrise Hall), perhaps an actual building in the area. The two rectangular areas with many characters are references to poems, though they are more of a gesture so are not legible. Interestingly, the characters below the man with the glasses reads "Nin So", referring to his occupation of physiognomy; the lady is paying him a fee to sort of read her fortune or interpret her personality based on her physical characteristics.
