Superman, Batman and Robin admire wind-up automaton versions of themselves, anticipating the action figure boom of future decades. Three-dimensional representations of superheroes were rare in the 1940s; aside from the occasional Superman doll or Captain Marvel figurine, these characters had little tangible reality outside of the pages of comic books.
