Description
Olmec Ancestor Figure Holding Ball (900-600 BC)
In a rare gesture, this Olmec figure has both arms upturned and extended with a ballgame rubber ball in each hand. The name 'Olmec' comes from the Nahuatl word for the Olmecs: Ōlmēcatl. This word is composed of the two words: olli, meaning "natural rubber", and mecatl, meaning “people”, so the word means "rubber people”. Rubber was an important part of the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame, and the balls have been found in sacred burials in swamplands that preserved them.
