Description
This dramatic Pre-Raphaelite, 1857 period framed engraving of a Sir John Everett Mallais 1852 painting entitled "The Huguenot on Eve of St. Bartholomew's Day 1572", engraved by Thomas Oldham Barlow. It depicts a pair of young lovers. The girl a Catholic and her lover, a Protestant. She has tied a white band on his arm to signify his allegiance to the Catholic Church, and he is pulling it off as he is embracing her. This image refers to the Protestant Reformation in France, and the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre on August 24, 1572 where 3,000 Protestant men were murdered in Paris, and 20,000 murdered across France in the struggle between Roman Catholics and Protestants. This finely detailed engraving is in very good condition, as is the period frame, and measures 39" tall x 30.5" across.
