**First Time At Auction**

Northern Greece / Danube River Valley, Thrace, Iron Age, ca. 7th century BCE. A beautiful and wearable necklace called a torq (also torc) made from thick bronze wire with a body that twists around several times to create a helical pattern. The grooves spirals smooth out towards the outer arms to create a comfortable surface for the wearer, and each terminal coils around to form a decorative ring. Torcs were beautiful signs of prestige and wealth from the European Iron Age through the Viking period, so-called from the Latin word "torques," meaning "to twist," because of their appearance. Size: 7.1" Diameter (18 cm); (opening between terminals): 2.4" W (6.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
