Description
ALVIN LANGDON COBURN, Study - Miss R., 1904, 8.5x6.5" Photogravure, Printed 1904.
This Coburn portrait possesses a similar solitude as the Stettner in the previous lot, but here it is emphasized by mysterious lighting and shadow.
Alvin Langdon Coburn (1882-1966) was an early 20th-century photographer who was central to the development of American pictorialism. He also made some of the first completely abstract photographs. Born in Boston, his professional career began at age 17 when nine of his photographs were acquired by the Royal Photographic Society in London, where Coburn and his mother had moved in 1899. He became a member of the prestigious group The Linked Ring, an association of the most elite artistic photographers of that era. After studying with Edward Steichen, Robert Demachy, Gertrude Käsebier, and Arthur Wesley Dow, he traveled throughout Europe photographing images that would become the frontispieces for an American edition of Henry James' novels. His works were published in Camera Work (No. 15 & 21) and exhibited at Alfred Stieglitz's 291 gallery.
