Western Europe, Spain, ca. mid-18th century CE. A cast-iron plug bayonet with an elongated triangular blade. The blade has a shallow midrib on both sides, sharpened edges that taper to a pointed tip, and a thick back section outlined with two pairs of incised grooves. The tubular quillon has knob-shaped terminals, and the slender wooden handle can he wielded in one's hand. The plug bayonet was made to fit into the barrel of a soldier's rifle once a shot had been fired to keep steady the offensive wave without having to fall back to reload. Size: 12.3" L x 4" W (31.2 cm x 10.2 cm).

Minor nicks to wooden handle and blade, with light encrustations, and loosening to iron handle plug, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
