James A.M. Whistler, Thames Set etching #9, 1859, James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903), "The Lime Burner" (Kennedy 46), one of sixteen drypoint etchings from the Thames Set, on cream laid paper, signed and dated in the plate, likely second state of two, De Erven D. Blauw (DEDB) watermark, published by Ellis and Green, London, 1871, matted and unframed, 10"h x 57"w (plate), 1"h x 7.75"w (sheet)
Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dr. Leonard D. Hamilton
Notes/Literature: Leonard D. Hamilton studied at Balliol College, Oxford, and Trinity College, Cambridge, before moving to the US in 1949. He was a brilliant researcher who played an important role in the discovery of the structure of DNA. A keen art collector, Dr. Hamilton owned works by the likes of Whistler, Matisse, Picasso and Candido Portinari.
