Description
***Auction Highlight*** 1856-s/s TY 2 FS-501 RPM Gold Dollar $1 Graded Select AU By USCG. The mintmark was initially punched northeast, creating this dramatic Cherry pickers' variety. The 1856-S gold dollar is the only San Francisco Mint issue for the popular Type Two design, which ran for just three years. all of San Francisco's gold dollar output -- a meager 24,600 coins -- was of the coveted (and fleeting) Type Two variety. In addition, no other Type Two gold dollars were coined at any U.S. mint in 1856, as the Philadelphia and Dahlonega gold dollars struck were of the Type Three design. The effects are twofold: Not only is the 1856-S a requirement for a complete mintmark or year set of Type Two old dollars, but the S mintmark gives the 1856 Type Two pieces optimal collectibility. This is a nearly Uncirculated example with central softness on the curls owing more to an incomplete impression than wear. Orange-gold surfaces are warm and appealing
