Description
CAVAZZA, JOHANN BATTISTA. Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula. Engraved folding map of the world within a Mannerist architectural border frame. 15¾x23 inches sheet size, wide margins; an excellent example with original folds and crisp inking. - Bologna, 1642
Handsome world map originally included as an illustration to "Geographicae Crucis Fabrica et Usus", Giovanni Battista Riccioli's scarce seventeenth-century treatise on charts and devices. The base map, derived from the Visscher format of 1639, is surrounded by a decorative frame with two curved arms at either side. These props were intended to be removed, trimmed, and attached to the map to create a planispheric volvelle of sorts capable of demonstrating the exposure to sunlight or darkness of a certain area of the world at a specific time. Shirley 357.
