Taino. Unique turtle Cemi/stamp with complex iconographic incising covering shell. In Taino creation myth the turtle was the birth mother for their culture. A "Spirit or ghost" face can be seen in the top half of shell. Base is 6 facing triangulate swirls. The low profile of the shell indicates it represents a water turtle rather than a land turtle like a box turtle or gopher tortoise. Made of jasper. Provenance: ex- Collection of Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculpture Art of the Gods" and "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements, Inhaling the Cosmic Dust." Size: 1'' x 2.75'' x 4.5'' (3 x 7 x 11 cm).
