Description
This Original "Boys and Girls! You Can Help Your Uncle Sam Win the War Save Your Quarters Buy War Savings Stamps." World War 1 Poster by James Montgomery Flagg is in good condition. The lithograph is Excellent- vibrant colors, no holes but damage along one side. With a poster like this most likely it will be matted so damage will not show up. Large Size! 28 ½” long X 20" width. A little history: World War I required the marshaling of the resources of the United States as never before. There were also massive campaigns to recycle materials and to get people to invest in the war effort by purchasing war bonds. Children were encouraged to participate by helping to collect the recyclables and to buy stamps with their nickels, dimes, and quarters. The whole country was encouraged to be part of the overall effort to help win the war. Posters like this encouraged all Americans to participate in the war effort. Children couldn’t afford liberty bonds, but to encourage them to support World War I, the government sold war savings stamps, which is in Uncle Sam's left hand, worth 10 cents and 25 cents. Like war bonds, the stamps paid interest. In this poster, Uncle Sam teaches children a lesson not only about patriotism but about the importance of saving. Note how the artist has the boy looking at Uncle Sam, Uncle Sam looking at the boy, and the girl looking at the W.S.S.; this set up keeps the viewer looking between the four subjects and emphasizes the topic of children and patriotism. James Montgomery Flagg is the artist responsible for the most iconic poster ever produced. The top hat, the goatee, the burning eyes and that long accusing finger – the "I Want YOU!" poster has become one of the most iconic images in American history. Used by the U.S. Army to recruit troops during the First World War, this image transformed the character of Uncle Sam into a stern and powerful figure. His persuasive pose and marked demeanor proved to be a hugely effective tool during the war, and a staggering four million copies of it were printed between 1917 and 1918.; While the poster continues to be recognized the world over, its creator's name has not fared quite as well. Born in New York in 1877, James Montgomery Flagg was a hugely prolific illustrator, who – at the peak of his career – was said to have been the highest paid magazine illustrator in all of America. Talented from a young age, Flagg had sold his first illustration at the age of twelve. By fourteen he had become a regular illustrator for Life, and two years after that he joined the staff of its rival publication Judge. Flagg used his own face for that of Uncle Sam (adding age and the white goatee), he said later, simply to avoid the trouble of arranging for a model.[7] President Franklin Delano Roosevelt praised his resourcefulness for using his own face as the model. By some accounts though, Flagg had a neighbor, Walter Botts, pose for the piece.
