1860 1ed Ebony Idol American Slavery Racism vs Abolitionist Uncle Tom’s Cabin
‘The Ebony Idol’ is a pro-slavery fictional novel written at the beginning of the Civil War in response to the abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The story revolves around a Reverend Mr. Cary bringing in a fugitive slave to act as an ‘ebony idol’ which splits the town between pro and anti-slavery sentiment which leads Cary to ultimately agreeing to return Caesar, the fugitive slave, to plantations in the south, ‘restoring the town to its idyllic condition.’
“An anonymous novel published in the North on the eve of the Civil War, satirizing a New England abolitionist clergyman and depicting the dire consequences of his harboring a fugitive slave. This was one of several novels written in reaction to Uncle Tom's Cabin.” (Wright II).
This 1860 edition features 12 black and white illustrations throughout.
