Description
1923 Oil on canvas portrait of a young girl with a large white bow in her bobbed hair and a gold locket around her neck. Signed center right, "A. Schmidlin 23". Born in Lahr, Schmidlin studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts with Ferdinand Keller, Theodor Poeckh, Caspar Ritter and Ernst Schurth. He went on to study at the Academy in Munich and in Paris, Rome and Berlin. Known for bringing a 'warm realism' to his portraiture, his subjects included Friedrich I and Friedrich II, Grand Dukes of Baden, and Heinrich Hansjakob, Archbishop Conrad Gröber and Tübingen University Chancellor August Hegler. In period gilt gesso frame. Frame, approx. 29" x 26", sight approx. 23" x 19 1/4".
