Description
1869 Good Society Manual of Manners Slavery Racism Servant Promenade Lady Toilet
“Good Society” is a post-civil war guide on manners for men and women of the 19th century. This guide includes information on arranging a lady’s house, managing servants, the lady’s toilet, the gentleman’s toilet, riding and driving, the promenade, the ball, engagement and marriage, as well as appendices on ‘the rules of presentation at court, foreign courts, papal court, formal mode of address, one hundred selected toasts, and more!
This book being published after the civil war makes clear that servants are to be treated as human beings with an employer to employee relationship and not a master to slave relationship. However, the undertones of racism still show up in phrases like “one can never over-estimate the effect of sympathy in dealing with a class of inferior rank to our own.”
This 1888 edition includes an illustrated frontispiece of an afternoon party and is bound in a decorative green cloth.
