BIOGRAPHY:
Herman Peterson was a 20th century portrait and impressionist landscape painter from Winnetka, Illinois. He was a graduate of Valparaiso (Indiana) University and worked in the Chicago area. He also did architectural renderings for Chicago architectural companies.
He was commissioned by the U.S. Navy to do twelve portraits of famous U.S. naval heroes. Some of these paintings are in U.S. Naval Museum, Washington, D.C. and U.S. Naval Shipyards, Washington, D.C. He also painted several portraits of Northwestern University Professors including the wife of the
NWU president, and also painted portraits of well-known corporate presidents and others.
Peterson painted landscapes of Starved Rock State Park, Winnetka; the Indiana Sand Dunes; Beach of Great Lakes, and other Illinois/Indiana/ Wisconsin country/farm scenes. He also painted landscapes during trips to the western United States.
Peterson grew up on a Wisconsin farm. As an adult, his hobby was mathematics, and he published a mathematical formula for steel reinforced concrete for super highways.
