Description
This lot consists of a fine art print on paper, done in the Surrealist style of Paul Delvaux (Belgian, 1897-1994). Image appears to be a study for (or a version of) Delvaux's 1968 painting, "Le sacrifice d'Iphigénie". Image depicts a blonde woman seated at the forefront, with several other figures and an expanding nighttime scene beyond her. Handwritten graphite inscriptions at bottom edge of print read, "24/50" and "P. Delvaux". This unframed piece measures approximately 11.75" x 8.25" overall; image sight approximately 5.5" x 4.75".
Paul Delvaux (Belgian, 1897-1994) was a Surrealist painter who was preoccupied with the subjects of women, design, and mortality. Beginning in the 1920s and spanning late into the century, Delvaux created a huge body of work ranging in stylistic influence from Expressionism to Metaphysical to Surrealist. Delvaux was named director of the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1965, and the Paul Delvaux Museum opened in 1982 in Sint-Idesbald, where Delvaux and many other influential artists would often frequent the private studio of George Grard. Paul Delvaux died in 1994 at the age of 97.
